Medical Assisting

Medical assistants perform administrative and clinical duties under the direction of a physician. The duties of medical assistants vary from office to office, but their work usually consists of scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding for insurance purposes. Depending on state law, clinical duties include taking and recording vital signs, prepping patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by the physician. Medical assistants also may arrange examining room instruments and equipment, purchase and maintain supplies and equipment. They also must maintain a clean waiting and examining room for patients and staff. In small practices, medical assistants usually perform many other different tasks, handling both administrative and clinical duties, and reporting directly to a physician or another health practitioner.
Not only do medical assistants tend to really enjoy their well-lighted and clean work environment, but they are getting continuous interaction from many different patients. The medical assisting programs are offered vocational-technical high schools, post-secondary vocational schools, and community colleges. Post-secondary programs usually last either 1 year and result in a certificate or diploma, or 2 years and result in an associate degree. Many medical assistants are trained on the job, and usually only need to have a high school diploma or the equivalent.
As the health care industry expands because of technological advances in medicine and the growth and aging of the population, there will be an increased need for all health care workers.
