Were you one of many students or working professionals that fell in love with the hit television series "Grey's Anatomy" or "ER?" Fell in love with the show so much that it actually made you want to become a nurse or doctor? Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but working in the health field is far from that. I mean sure, you "might" work with an incredible looking doctor or registered nurse, but falling in love with them while saving a patient by performing a surgical procedure with very little knowledge is far from reality.
In fact, working in the medical field requires a great deal of motivation, determination, and commitment. You should consider figuring out what your motive is towards working in the medical/health care field, because many people aspire to become nurses, but keep in mind, whether your wanting to become a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse know that the education and training takes dedication. It takes a hard working individual to successfully work in the health care field. Is it the money your drawn to? A fan of science and math? Or do you thoroughly enjoy helping people? These are all excellent motives to work in the health care field, and knowing your motives will help you stay motivated when times get rough.
You should also ask yourself if you possess specific qualities that are crucial within working in the medical field. Good interpersonal and communication skills is necessary, because you will be communicating with patients and physician's throughout the day. In essence, the patient's lives rely on the quality of your work. If you are the type of person who also loves to learn new things, then working as a health care professional will suit you best. In today's society, the health care field is undergoing constant changes with the development of new technology, advanced procedures, and emerging treatments, so having the willingness to learn new and up to date information is important.
Last, you should keep in mind what type of environment you would like to work in. If your the type of person who gets easily depressed, then you should stay away from working in a hospice environment where patients tend to have a few more days left to live. If you love working with children on a day to day basis, then consider working as a pediatric nurse or pediatrician. If your the type of individual that works better alone and prefers not to interact with people, then consider being a pathologist.
