Obama Tackles Healthcare Reform and Offers Changes for Nurses

A new healthcare reform bill initially proposed by Barack Obama has been passed by the U.S. House of Representatives. Though some of the effects won’t be seen for several months or even years, this bill marks a major change in the healthcare system of the United States. Not since Medicare was created in 1965 has the U.S. experienced such a significant shift in the healthcare offered to the American public.

As Obama tackles healthcare for the nation, many groups of people are affected by the new laws being put into place. For example, the healthcare laws will raise the funding for the National Health Service Corps, a program which sends workers in the medical and dental fields into areas with a shortage of healthcare professionals. In fact, eliminating the shortage of registered nurses and other healthcare employees is the goal of many of the new laws put into effect by the new bill. Part of this will be accomplished through an increase in financial aid for nurses, physician assistants, mental health providers and primary care physicians in the form of scholarships and loan repayment. Nursing schools can also receive some financial aid through the new bill; grants will be awarded to some schools in order to strengthen their nursing programs and improve student retention.

Additional employment opportunities may be brought about by the expansion of healthcare to underserved populations. New school health centers will be available on school campuses across the nation. The centers will be staffed by nurses and offer uninsured students the opportunity to receive important medical care. Nurse practitioners will also be able to manage clinics which provide preventative and primary care to patients; this will help increase the health care options in areas where there is a shortage of doctors and primary care physicians.

As a result of Obama tackling healthcare, nurses can expect to see significant changes within their field. In an effort to provide healthcare to many millions of people who were previously uninsured, nurses may be utilized more than ever to help care for sick patients. Meanwhile, grant and scholarship programs will ensure that more Americans are brought into the healthcare workforce through financial aid and strong education programs.

Nursing Licensure – Information about the NCLEX

Whether you’re becoming a registered nurse (RN) or a licensed practical nurse (LPN), you’ll need to take a standardized test before you receive your nursing license. This test is called the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and is the same for all nurses across the country, though different versions are given based on whether you have studied to be an LPN or an RN.

In order to find out about taking the NCLEX in your state, you should contact your state board of nursing. You must first apply with the state board before you can register for the exam. If you qualify for taking the NCLEX, the state board of nursing will allow you to go on to register for the exam. Also, they can advise you about any additional licensure requirements in the state in which you hope to practice. For example, some states require that nurses take an additional state test in addition to the national test in order to receive their license to practice nursing. This is critical information that can affect any job prospects you have, so many sure to ask about it when you call your state board of nursing or visit their website.

Once you’re approved by the state board of nursing, you can register for the NCLEX. Your state board will send you an NCLEX Examination Candidate Bulletin in the mail. After that, you can go online, fill out a paper form or call the National Council or State Boards of Nursing testing service to register for the NCLEX. Once the date has been set, you’ll get an Authorization to Take the Test (ATT) in the mail. The ATT includes all the locations and dates in your area where you can take the NCLEX and will provide instructions for how to schedule a test appointment.

The NCLEX is definitely a challenge, but your college education in these fields should do a great job preparing you for these tests. Even so, there are several ways you can prepare for taking the NCLEX. Your notes, tests and textbooks from your education can be a great resource for studying in the weeks leading up to your NCLEX exam. Also, you can visit the website for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing to get the RN or LPN test plan to find out more about how the test is administered. The test plan is also a great study guide because it covers each of the areas that will be included in the exam questions, such as injury prevention and high-risk behaviors.

If you think you need more help studying for the NCLEX, don’t worry; there are plenty of test preparation classes in which you can enroll to prepare for the exam. Furthermore, you can buy test preparation software that simulates the NCLEX on your computer. Both of these are excellent choices for preparing for the test since you will get to take several practice tests and see how the questions will be phrased on the exam. No matter what nursing program you participate in, make sure you are ready for the NCLEX upon graduation.

Staying Organized While Attending College Online

Many people choose to attend an online college specifically because they can work their classes, papers and exams in between their other obligations to family, work and other activities. While it may seem like a great idea at first, some online college students become overwhelmed when their schoolwork seems to eat up every minute of their free time. Since they can’t cut back hours at work, some people feel like they have to spend less time with family and friends in order to make it work.

Just because you’re completing your degree program online doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have any time to yourself. With the right tools for staying on schedule, you should be able to keep up with your college life while still retaining your social life. Here are a few hints on how to stay organized while attending college online.

Create a Schedule – And Stick to It

Invest in a nice calendar that you can hang up in your bedroom or workspace. As soon as you begin an online class, use this calendar to mark any important dates during the course of your class, whether it’s exam dates or the day a paper is due. Glancing at this calendar once or twice a day will help you stay on track during the semester as you work towards completing your associate's or bachelor's degree.

You should also get a planner that you can use for all of your daily activities, such as work, meetings or family events. Keep track of all your commitments, then schedule in regular times during the week where you know you’ll be free to get your class work done. It’s a good idea to stick to a regular schedule so that you know you have enough time set aside every week and you don’t fall behind. For example, it may work best for you to work on assignments and watch lectures on Monday and Wednesday nights. Then, you use Saturday morning to catch up on reading. Don’t forget to set aside time for special projects or studying for tests.

This method should help you stay organized throughout the semester. Remember, even if you have all your assignments completed, you can use your designated class work times to start working ahead on a term paper or study some of the class material. Working consistently will prevent your work from getting back up, which will leave you overwhelmed and crunched for time. Staying on track can also help you decrease the number of student loans you need to take out since you'll complete your degree more quickly if you stick to your schedule.

Make Your Own Personal Workspace

You may be lucky enough to take your classes at home, but it might not be as easy as you think. It can be easy to get distracted by TV or housework when you should be studying. Create a designated work space in your home where you can study in peace and quiet. Let your family members know you need to be left alone during your set class work times in order to complete your assignments. It may be hard for them to leave you alone at first, but eventually they will see that you have more time and are less stressed when you know you are caught up on your class work. A designated workspace will also help you Stay Motivated while doing class work. Trying to work with the laptop in your bed, for example, might be difficult since it may make you sleepy.

Following these tips should help you succeed while completing your degree online. It will still be hard work, but the ability to make your class schedule flexible and complete your class work from home will make earning a degree much easier in the long run.

Important Things to Consider Before Choosing a Health Career

Were you one of many students or working professionals that fell in love with the hit television series "Grey's Anatomy" or "ER?" Fell in love with the show so much that it actually made you want to become a nurse or doctor? Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but working in the health field is far from that. I mean sure, you "might" work with an incredible looking doctor or registered nurse, but falling in love with them while saving a patient by performing a surgical procedure with very little knowledge is far from reality.
In fact, working in the medical field requires a great deal of motivation, determination, and commitment. You should consider figuring out what your motive is towards working in the medical/health care field, because many people aspire to become nurses, but keep in mind, whether your wanting to become a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse know that the education and training takes dedication. It takes a hard working individual to successfully work in the health care field. Is it the money your drawn to? A fan of science and math? Or do you thoroughly enjoy helping people? These are all excellent motives to work in the health care field, and knowing your motives will help you stay motivated when times get rough.
You should also ask yourself if you possess specific qualities that are crucial within working in the medical field. Good interpersonal and communication skills is necessary, because you will be communicating with patients and physician's throughout the day. In essence, the patient's lives rely on the quality of your work. If you are the type of person who also loves to learn new things, then working as a health care professional will suit you best. In today's society, the health care field is undergoing constant changes with the development of new technology, advanced procedures, and emerging treatments, so having the willingness to learn new and up to date information is important.
Last, you should keep in mind what type of environment you would like to work in. If your the type of person who gets easily depressed, then you should stay away from working in a hospice environment where patients tend to have a few more days left to live. If you love working with children on a day to day basis, then consider working as a pediatric nurse or pediatrician. If your the type of individual that works better alone and prefers not to interact with people, then consider being a pathologist.

An Online Degree: Good? Bad? Or Spoiled Egg?

Currently in today's society, an online education is becoming acceptable. Reminisce to a time when you were either admitted into a hospital or doctor's office, you would probably be a bit uneasy to hear the doctor explaining how he became a doctor online. But, according to Vault, Inc., their survey demonstrates that “85% of employers feel that online degrees are more acceptable today than they were five years ago.” Just like campus based schools, there are schools with great reputations, bad reputations, and occasionally a spoiled egg. This same concept applies to the online institutions as well.
When looking for a reputable online program, accreditation is the most important criteria to validate in order to prevent yourself from finding a "spoiled egg." In simplistic terms, accreditation means that a college has proven that what they are teaching is current and factual. The methods they use to teach successfully meet the standard requirements set by the National Education Association. If a college is not accredited, then it is looked at as inferior because it may not comply with current educational standards. University of Phoenix, DeVry University and Kaplan University are accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA-HLC), and the Higher Learning Commission, because they have made a commitment to providing a quality education for their online students.
To make the most of your education, you have to be willing to take the extra steps, because you are the only one that can control the outcome of your educational journey. It's important for taking time to find out the quality of the courses the school has to offer, the legitimacy of the professors, and the access to direct communication with your classmates and faculty.
Again, take your time and be selective when choosing a program and University. Whether your interested in becoming a licensed practical nurse, dental assistant, or a registered nurse, always look at all your options before putting all your eggs in one basket. With that said, acknowledge the advice and make use of this because, it would be a shame to waste your time and money and end up with a "spoiled egg."

Tips For Going Back To School Online

Online education is a great way to be able to study in the privacy of your own home. No matter your age, going back to school can be physically and mentally challenging. It will require you to make some adjustments to your life; social, professional, and family. However, your back to school survival guide is here!

First, if you can afford it, then purchase your own laptop or desktop PC. This is extremely beneficial because designating a separate machine devoted only for school/educational purposes will help you better focus on your academic tasks. On top of that, having your own laptop or desktop PC will eliminate any confrontation involving whose turn is next to use the computer. Therefore, this allows your friends, family, or kids to manage their own time on their own computers.

Second, create your own classroom inside the comforts of your own home. Whether this may be in the family room, bedroom, kitchen, or office, it is important to set aside a space for school because your learning environment is an important aspect of your education. Think of an ideal place that is quite, well lighted, organized, and comfortable. If you work in a positive environment, you will produce positive work.

Third, your time is going to be even more limited than it already is, especially if you will be working full time and if you have kids, taking care of them while taking classes online will be a handful. One of the best things that you can do for yourself is to prepare in advance. Making a list in your planner or calendar is very beneficial to organizing specific reminders that need to be addressed or completed. This will allow you to designate time to balance all of your activities.

Fourth, simply take care of yourself. It is vital to set a time to escape and to take a break from studying. Go outside and enjoy a walk around the neighborhood or to the park. If you are a member of a gym, go for a run. A well rested body can produce positive results. If you have kids, go out and play with them. Also, try to find time to sleep well and to eat healthy. Stay away from the caffeine and junk food. Consume lots of fruit, vegetables, water, and fiber. High fiber foods are found to boost your memory.

Fifth, post your goals throughout your house. On the refrigerator, bathroom mirrors, bedroom walls, etc. A constant reminder of what your working for will keep you grounded and motivated. Getting started is one thing, but to successfully continue to move forward is another, that's why it is key to post your goals throughout your house or wherever it will suit you best.

Your Online Degree in Education Is A Money Saver

One of the most drastic advantages of online education is the cost. When you don't have to deal with housing, transportation, books, parking permits, and lost wages, the difference in savings is huge. Your educational journey will be one of the most important investments you will make in your life. Why not pursue your dream and save money at the same time?! An online degree will free you from paying out of state tuition, which can save you thousands of dollars. Another advantage online schooling has to offer when it comes to saving you money is having the opportunity to cut down your commute. This is possible because online schooling allows you to work from anywhere, so working from your own home usually works best. Completing your homework from home saves you gas money, bus fare, parking costs/permits, and your overall car maintenance. On top of that, the flexibility that online programs provide allows you to keep your current job versus having to deal with the stress when looking for a second job in order to go to school and work from a strict schedule. A traditional education does not offer the flexibility a online schooling education does.
